Midwest Cold Fading as Snow Returns

January 10, 2010 at 8:25PM

Decidedly cold weather will keep a grip on the Midwest today even as theharshest of the frigid blast fades. A slightly milder, southwesterly flow ofair is developing across the Plains and the Midwest as a clipper system divestoward the upper Great Lakes by tonight.Sites as diverse and far-flung as Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Louis andKansas City will, following widespread single-digit lows, have daytimetemperatures in the 20s, 30s and 40s. By the middle of the week, all of themajor Midwest cities will have temperatures cracking through the freezing markon one or more days.

Meanwhile, the clipper moving southeastward from the Canadian Prairies towardthe Great Lakes will kick up another round of snow. One to three inches willfall and create slippery roadways in some communities by Monday morning.

Brisk winds and lake-effect snow showers will start up again behind the weakstorm. The snow and the winds should not create conditions as harsh as thispast week. The next lake-effect snow event will not be as long-lasting as thispast one either.
