Meat Puppets sneak into 400 Bar tonight

The Arizona/Texas indie-rock pioneers added a second show before their Friday gig.

After performing down in Red Wing last night at their pal Greg Norton's namesake restaurant (ex-Hüsker Dü bassist), the Meat Puppets are coming into town a night early tonight and went ahead and added a gig at the 400 Bar in addition to their show there on Friday night. Click here for ticket info. I got the heads up on the bonus show in an email from their current drummer, Shandon Sahm, son of Texas music legend Doug (Sir Douglas) Sahm. Shandon also played in the remade version of the Puppets with Curt Kirkwood a decade ago, when Cris Kirkwood was missing for years with drug addictions. Cris is back and well again, and together they just finished recording a new album at Spoon drummer Jim Eno's studio in Austin. For native desert dwellers, these guys have taken a surprising liking to Minnesota. Last year, they also played gigs in Rochester and Duluth, the latter a date with their tourmates at the time, Retribution Gospel Choir. The Duluth gig also reportedly saw Norton and Grant Hart jam with the band (a 2/3 Hüsker Dü reunion). Alas, there's no video of that set, but here's a clip of RGC's Alan Sparkhawk joining the Puppets for their classic "Up on the Sun" at the Mercury Lounge in New York.
