Mean March

March 3, 2011 at 8:25PM

In regard to the severity of the weather, March could very well be the worstmonth of the year. Violent collisions between air masses often spawn hugestorms that produce wicked blizzards and raging floods.Furthermore, there is a marked increase in the frequency of severethunderstorms and tornadoes from Texas to Georgia and the Carolinas.

March is also renown for being exceptionally windy. This is due to the strongsurface heating that takes place, which causes wind energy from above to mixdown to the surface.

A few of the worst atmospheric upheavals of all time include the Great NewEngland Blizzard of 1888, the northern Great Plains Blizzard of 1966 (wholetrains buried), and the more recent Storm of the Century in 1993.

The worst tornado ever also occurred in March. On March 18, 1925 a monster F5tornado tracked from Missouri to Indiana, obliterating everything in its path.

The storm took 695 lives.

All these nasty traits are the price that has to be paid for the arrival ofspring.
