White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing interviewed with the Twins on Friday about their vacant managerial position, according to a person with knowledge of the search.

McEwing, who also interviewed for vacancies in Arizona and Texas this week, is the seventh known candidate to replace Ron Gardenhire as Twins manager.

And there will be soon a No. 8. According to a team source, the Twins will interview Boston bench coach Torey Lovullo on Saturday.

McEwing, 41, played nine seasons in the majors and earned the nickname "Super Joe" because he could play every position in the field, expect catcher. He retired in the 2007 season and joined the White Sox organization as a Class AAA hitting instructor. He moved to Class A Winston-Salem in 2009 as manager, then to Class AAA Charlotte as manager in 2011. He joined Robin Ventura's staff in 2012.

Among his Twins connections is that McEwing managed Aaron Hicks and Brian Dozier for Mesa of the Arizona Fall League in 2011. Dozier has spoken highly of McEwing, crediting him for helping him with his range during their time in the AFL.

Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said Thursday that he intends to interview several more candidates and could make a decision by the end of the month.

Oakland bench coach Chip Hale interviewed Thursday. The Twins have received permission to interview Cleveland bench coach Sandy Alomar.

The known in-house candidates are Paul Molitor, Doug Mientkiewicz and Gene Glynn.
