McDaniels to Rams or Falcons?

What's going on with Josh McDaniels? The NFL Network offers one theory.

January 11, 2011 at 3:14PM

One of the most popular questions in recent days has been what became of the Vikings meeting with Josh McDaniels on Friday?

The Vikings and McDaniels camp both haven't said a word about how things went or if the former Broncos coach might be headed to Minnesota. Well, Jason La Canfora put on his Twitter page this evening that he hears McDaniels could be headed to the St. Louis Rams as offensive coordinator if Pat Shurmur is hired by the Cleveland Browns as their head coach.

McDaniels would be stepping into a situation in St. Louis where he would be working with Rams quarterback Sam Bradford. Atlanta also has identified McDaniels as a potential replacement for Mike Mularkey should he take a head coaching job, according to La Canfora. That would give McDaniels a chance to team with Falcons standout quarterback Matt Ryan.

Obviously, the Vikings don't have an idea at this point whom their quarterback will be in 2011.

Shurmur hasn't been hired by the Browns and Mularkey's team is in the postseason so it's unclear how the situation might play out and how much time the Vikings are going to give McDaniels to make up his mind. Given the complete silence so far, there is a chance he already has decided. If he turned the Vikings down, the team and McDaniels would have little incentive to comment on it.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying McDaniels has said either "yes" or "no" to the Vikings but clearly there was no quick agreement. It will be interesting to see if the Vikings turn their attention elsewhere in the coming days in their search for an offensive coordinator.
