Time to get your tall bike tuned up. Now in its 36th year, In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre's May Day celebration is upon us again, giving anarchists, punks, yogis, pagans and warm-weather worshipers an excuse to erupt in communal merriment. And to wear face paint. This year's theme, the appropriately all-caps "UPROAR!," nicely sums up the event's large-heartedness, and its large scale. Expect theatrical uproar over our shared economic strife, a joyful uproar over the beauty of spring, and a fleet of giant snails ferrying in "the roar of the unfolding universe." Mix in some 10-foot-tall puppets, tai chi tigers that move with conscious breath, and flying tigers that merge with the sun and clouds (2010 is the Year of the Tiger), and you've got a pretty solid Sunday afternoon.
- Parade starts at 1 p.m. at 26th St. and Bloomington Av. S., Mpls., continuing toward Powderhorn Park. Tree of Life Ceremony at 3:30 p.m. in the park. Festival ends at 7 p.m.
