Maryland program WORDE is first of its kind to counter violent extremism

Leaders in Montgomery County, Md., say theirs is the first U.S. program led by a community nonprofit to counter violent extremism. To learn more, go to worde.org. The effort includes:

• Opportunities for law enforcement, county leaders and minority communities to mingle and build trust

• Events that raise awareness about radical recruitment and about both right-wing and Islamic extremism

• Training for parents, police officers, educators and others on recognizing the risk factors for radicalization

• A counseling program for young people vulnerable to radical propaganda

• An effort to create short videos and social media messages that counter radical propaganda online
