Voters in Hennepin County's Third District elected former state Rep. Marion Greene to the County Board on Tuesday.
She will replace Gail Dorfman, who left the board earlier this year to take another job.
The holder of the Third District seat represents St. Louis Park and much of southwest Minneapolis.
Greene, a DFLer who has a background in health care finance, becomes one of seven commissioners on the board.
Greene, 43, beat Anne Mavity, 50, an affordable-housing consultant and St. Louis Park City Council member who had served as an aide to Dorfman.
Greene garnered 53.5 percent of the votes to Mavity's 46 percent.
The district is at the center of a dispute over the location of the planned Southwest Corridor light-rail line.
Mavity and Greene were the top vote-getters in a nonpartisan six-way primary two weeks ago. Greene must run again in the fall if she wants to stay in the seat for a full four-year term. But in that election she will have the advantage of incumbency.
