Veteran cornerback and special-teams standout Marcus Sherels agreed to a two-year deal tonight to re-sign with the Vikings, according to a source.

The Rochester native ranked 12th in the NFL last season with an average of 9.1 yards per punt return. Sherels scored a 65-yard touchdown on a punt return in a 23-20 victory over the Bears in early November, and was named as the NFC's Special Teams Player of the Week for that performance.

He was second in the NFL in punt return average in 2013 and sixth in 2014.

Sherels is also one of the NFL's better gunners on the punt-coverage team.

Sherels, who attended college at Minnesota, signed with the Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He has played 81 games with the team.

Sherels visited the Jets on Thursday but left New York without a deal.
