BASTIA, Corsica — German rider Marcel Kittel set out in the yellow jersey on Sunday's second stage of the 100th Tour de France.
The sprinter stayed out of trouble to win Saturday's chaotic first stage, which saw riders crashing and a bus parked on the finish line until moments from the end.
Stage 2 is shorter but features four climbs, including a category-2 ascent up Col de Vizzavona, along the 97-mile trek from Bastia to Ajaccio.
Tony Martin of the Omega Pharma-Quick Step team recovered from several injuries to take the start.
Martin was one of more than a dozen riders to fall Saturday. The German was taken to hospital after losing consciousness and sustaining a contusion to his left lung, cuts to his hip, chest, left knee and shoulder, and his back.
