Police in Oakdale are pursuing several leads in a weekend hit-and-run that injured a 5-year-old Maplewood boy after a school fundraiser on Friday night.

The boy, Jakob Schafer, was in fair condition Monday at Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

He had a broken upper right leg bone and pelvis after being struck by a dark-colored sport-utility vehicle about 7:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Pump It Up indoor play center in the 7000 block of Sixth Street N. in Oakdale.

His mother, Shellie Rowe, told KSTP-TV that the boy and his father, Sean Schafer, were leaving the play center when Jakob chased a bouncing ball into the parking lot and was struck.

The SUV left the area without stopping. Witnesses said they heard a “thump” but did not see the boy get hit. Officers arrived to find Schafer holding his son, who was taken by ambulance to the hospital.

Police do not have a license plate number for the vehicle but are pursuing a number of possible leads, said Michelle Stark, community affairs officer with the Oakdale Police Department.
