NEW ULM, MINN. - Authorities are investigating a crash involving a New Ulm police squad car that killed a Mankato man and injured his mother.

Brian Bruce Wichmann, 51, was fatally injured Friday afternoon. His 82-year-old mother, Myra Ann Meyer, was seriously hurt.
Meyer was driving on a New Ulm street when she turned left into a driveway and her car was struck by the squad car on the passenger side, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The squad car was driven by New Ulm officer Mathew Rasmussen, 31, who has seven years of police experience and 18 months with the New Ulm Police Department.
Wichmann died at New Ulm Medical Center. Meyer was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. The officer was treated for a broken arm.
