A suspect was charged Thursday in the kidnapping of a man and woman in the Hawthorne neighborhood, in what authorities described as a marijuana deal turned sour.

Police say the harrowing incident unfolded on March 27 outside of a house in the 2700 block of Aldrich Avenue N. The victims — an 18-year-old woman and her 17-year-old boyfriend — had arranged to sell marijuana to Alexis Marie Smith, who got into the couple's car along with Keshawn Jones, police said. When Jones, 21, "became concerned about the weight of the marijuana," he pulled out a revolver and pistol-whipped the boyfriend as he got out of the car, before ordering him to get into the trunk, according to a criminal complaint filed Thursday in Hennepin County District Court.

Smith, who was also charged, then ordered the female victim back into the car and the four of them drove away. Police say that Jones pulled the car over a short while later and fondled the woman, and then told her to get out, warning her that if she tried to call the police that her boyfriend would die.

The woman recalled hearing her boyfriend beating on the trunk as Jones and Smith drove away, police said.

The male victim told police that he overheard Smith and Jones discussing whether they needed to kill him as they drove, the complaint said. When the car stopped and the suspects got out, he managed to crawl through a small opening in the back seat and escaped. He later picked Jones out of a photo lineup, according to the complaint.

Jones remains in Dakota County jail on an unrelated charge after being arrested in Rosemount on Wednesday afternoon. He faces two counts of kidnapping and two counts of first-degree robbery in the Minneapolis case.
