A man who died last week while in Lake Minnetonka was identified on the day of his funeral Monday as David L. Roberts, a member of the St. Francis school board.

Authorities responded to a medical emergency around 6:40 p.m. near Lafayette Bay involving a man in distress, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Jon Collins. Bystanders had pulled the man ashore when emergency workers arrived. Resuscitation efforts failed, and the victim died at the scene.

It remains unclear how long Roberts, 36, of Oak Grove, was submerged. Collins could not confirm whether he was swimming or boating on the lake.

The Hennepin County medical examiner's office said Monday the cause and manner of death are "pending further investigation." The death was the second on Lake Minnetonka this summer.

Roberts joined the school board in 2014. His term was to have run until 2018.

In a statement, the School District said that Roberts' "dedicated service and commitment to the students, families, staff and community members of [the district] will be greatly missed."

Roberts, whose funeral was in Andover Monday, leaves behind a wife, Jen, and four children.
