The 34-year-old man who drowned after suffering a medical emergency while swimming laps in an Eden Prairie pool this week was identified by authorities Saturday.

Demanche Chhoun, of Shakopee, was swimming at the Eden Prairie Community Center at 16700 Valley View Road on Thursday evening when he suddenly became unresponsive in the water. Police and paramedics were called about 8:30 p.m. Efforts to resuscitate Chhoun failed, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital about an hour later.

It remains unclear what type of emergency prompted the distress.

The pool was reopened Friday after an inspection by the county. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.

Chhoun, an educator, graduated from Mankato West Senior High School in 2001, according to his social media accounts. He later attended Bethel University and Augsburg College.
