The passenger killed in the crash of an alleged car thief fleeing police from a Mall of America parking lot was a 23-year-old man from Willmar, Minn., officials said Wednesday.

The crash occurred shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday on an entrance ramp to eastbound Interstate 494 from Lindau Lane, police said.

Abdikadir M. Issack died in the crash, the State Patrol said. Two other people in the car were injured and taken by ambulance to HCMC, according to police.

Suffering noncritical injuries were the driver, Abdeljabar Ahmed Sharif, 25, of Minneapolis, and a second passenger, Kanani Mekonen Legese, 20, also from Minneapolis, the State Patrol said.

According to police:

Police went to the Bloomington megamall after a license plate scanner at a parking ramp entrance identified the car as stolen.

A stolen car's license plate registered on a Mall of America scanner at a parking ramp entrance, prompting police to respond to the scene.

Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled to the I-494 on-ramp, where he struck a guardrail and then an overpass pillar.

Issack, who was a front-seat passenger, was declared dead at the scene.
