A man targeted for robbery on Hennepin Avenue in downtown Minneapolis told the gunman something akin to “you’re gonna have to shoot me” before he was killed in a hail of gunfire, according to charges.

Tyrone de Shun Childs Jr., 21, of Minneapolis, appeared Thursday in Hennepin County District Court in connection with the late-night shooting on Aug. 27 in the heart of the Hennepin Avenue theater district that killed Jermaine Jabaar Typray Barker, 35, of Rochester, and wounded another man.

Members of the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Childs on Wednesday in the 700 block of 12th Avenue N., police spokesman Sgt. Garrett Parten said Friday.

Childs, charged with second-degree murder, attempted robbery and second-degree assault, remains in custody in lieu of $1 million bail ahead of an Oct. 2 court hearing. Court records do not list an attorney for him.

The other gunshot victim, a 21-year-old man, survived his wounds, officials said.

According to the criminal complaint:

Officers responding to a report of a shooting shortly after 2 a.m. arrived near the intersection of 8th Street and Hennepin Avenue and saw Barker had been shot 13 times. Emergency responders declared him dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the shooter said something to the effect of “gimme that,” to which Barker replied with words along the lines of “you’re going to have to shoot me.”

Childs trained his gun’s laser on Barker and opened fire, sending several people playing dice on the sidewalk to scatter. Childs continued to shoot Barker after his victim fell to the pavement.

After shooting Barker, Childs bent over and appeared to go through his victim’s pockets and belongings.

“Extensive surveillance footage” captured Childs’ actions before, during and after the shooting including “distinctive features of [his] appearance,” the complaint read.

Childs “casually walked out of downtown, across the Hennepin Bridge ... to St. Anthony Main,” where he entered an apartment of a woman he shares a child with.

The County Attorney’s Office filed the charges last week, and they remained under a court-order seal until Childs’ arrest. Police have yet to say what led to his capture.
