As she prepared to bury her son, Michelle Olson got a bit of peace Thursday, she said, knowing that the man suspected of killing Jacob MacKenzie, 15, had turned himself in to St. Paul police.
Olson said there is talk of the shooting being an accident. But she is not about to forgive Alfredo Gutierrez-Gonzales, 19, who is expected to be charged today.
"I have no remorse for him," Olson said. "I hate him for what he did -- accident or not."
Police spokesman Peter Panos said that Gutierrez-Gonzales showed up at police headquarters about 8:45 a.m. Thursday and identified himself as the man being sought for the early Sunday shooting on the city's West Side.
Investigators offered no other details, Panos said.
The suspect surrendered three days after his girlfriend, Jayna Emerson, who also is the victim's cousin, made a tearful public plea for Gutierrez-Gonzales to turn himself in.
The surrender came on the same day as a visitation service for MacKenzie, and hours before his parents collected an award on his behalf from the alternative school he attended.
For the first time MacKenzie had earned full credit for quarterly coursework at Guadalupe Alternative Programs, associate director Jody Nelson said. The ceremony, initially set for Friday, was moved up so classmates could attend his funeral, to be held at 11 a.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 401 Concord St.
