A 35-year-old from St. Paul was identified Monday as the man who was shot to death in north Minneapolis over the weekend.

Robert Johnson died early Sunday from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Police officers responded to a report of a shooting just after midnight Sunday in the 3400 block of Fremont Av. N., where they found Johnson lying on the sidewalk.

He was taken to North Memorial Medical Center, where he died during surgery about 6:20 a.m.

Preliminary information from police indicated that Johnson and another man had been arguing. The man shot Johnson, then fled. The two knew each other.

No arrests have been made.

The man's death is the city's 19th homicide this year, compared to 14 at this same time last year.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call police at 612-692-TIPS.
