A man was shot to death Friday night in north Minneapolis, the city's 21st homicide of the year, according to police.

Patrol officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 4800 block of Aldrich Avenue N. about 10:20 p.m. While they were still on their way to the scene, the report was updated to a shooting.

Police found the victim when they arrived, lying on the sidewalk with an apparent gunshot wound. They gave medical aid and EMS workers came to the scene, but to no avail.

No one was in custody Friday night, and police said they do not know what led to the shooting. The police department's homicide unit is investigating the case. Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call 612-692-8477.

It was the second homicide in a week in the city. On Monday night, Derrick Gregory Martin, 20, was shot to death in an ambush along a bike path on the Lake Calhoun shoreline. Police said Martin was the latest victim in a gang war responsible for numerous shootings this year.

There were 19 homicides in all of 2009.
