A man with hundreds of BBs in his chest from an apparent shotgun blast was brought to an east-central Minnesota hospital by the gunman, who said the man —who would soon die — was the victim of a hunting accident, according to charges filed Thursday.

John T. Quitter, 36, of Chisago City, Minn., was charged in Pine County District Court with second-degree murder, illegal weapons possession and fleeing police in connection with the shooting Tuesday near Hinckley, Minn.

Quitter remained jailed in lieu of $250,000 bail and was scheduled to appear again in court Sept. 19. Court records do not list an attorney for him.

Officials said the victim was from Sandstone, Minn. Isanti County Sheriff's Capt. John Elder said his identity and age would be released after his family was notified.

According to the charges:

Essentia Health hospital in Sandstone called emergency dispatch after the shooting victim arrived there in his pickup truck driven by Quitter. The victim "had numerous bullet holes to his chest that appeared to be caused by birdshot from a shotgun," the complaint said.

The complaint said he "had over 250 BB wounds with a large concentration of them centered on the left side of his chest." There was also a wound on his bicep consistent with being hit with a shotgun shell wad.

The man died by the time sheriff's deputies arrived at the hospital.

Quitter gave the hospital staff a note with his name, "Lake Alma Road" and "Dick Berglund property" written on it. He said there had been "a coon hunting accident" and left in the pickup, according to the charges.

A woman told law enforcement that she went to Quitter's trailer on the Berglund property on Lake Alma Road with the shooting victim, who was her boyfriend, to pick up some of her possessions. She said she had once dated Quitter, but they had long since broken up.

She said that after she entered the trailer to meet Quitter, her boyfriend approached the residence, started yelling and broke out a window.

The woman said she heard a gunshot, ran to her boyfriend's pickup and found him unresponsive.

Investigators found shotgun shells and a pump shotgun in the nearby woods.

Quitter was arrested early that afternoon after he was spotted driving the victim's truck northeast of Sandstone and then leading officers on a chase at speeds up to 80 mph.

According to the complaint, Quitter "provided multiple versions of how the shooting occurred, but each time would admit that what he was saying didn't make sense. Quitter denied shooting [the man] but also stated that he did shoot him but not intentionally."
