December 6, 2014 at 3:33AM

An apparently suicidal man shot by Medina police in the western Hennepin County community of Hamel was identified Friday by authorities as Donald Kalib John Nichols, 23, of Medina.

Police shot and wounded him after officers said he was wielding a knife Thursday afternoon. His injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

After being called about a suicidal man, officers encountered Nichols, who ran into nearby woods near the Ling Inn Motel, according to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. He had a knife, police said, and subsequently, shots were fired.

Authorities declined to release additional information about what happened leading up to the shots. The incident remains under investigation.
