A man shot and killed by a Bloomington police officer Thursday has been identified.

Billie Noble Lobahanow, 50, of Bloomington, allegedly wielded a knife in each hand as he confronted the officer in the hallway of a Lyndale Av. apartment building.

Lobahanow died of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner's office.

Bloomington police have not yet identified the officer, though they intend to do so within a day, police Cmdr. Mark Stehlik said Friday.

About 2:40 p.m., Bloomington police responded to a report of a domestic assault involving Lobahanow and his sister, Stehlik said.

The first officer to arrive found that a caretaker who tried to intervene in the assault had been stabbed by Lobahanow.

Witnesses said that Lobahanow confronted the officer in the hallway and did not comply with repeated orders to stop and drop the knives, Stehlik said. No other police officers saw the shooting, he said.

The caretaker was taken to a hospital. Stehlik said he didn't know the man's condition, but "I wasn't under the impression that his injuries were critical by any means." It's not known whether the sister was hurt, but Stehlik said she wasn't taken to a hospital.

The medical examiner's report indicates that Lobahanow lived in the apartment building.
