A man who claimed to have schizophrenia and said he wanted to go to jail admitted Thursday that he stabbed a Cub Foods cashier in the chest in January.
GUILTY PLEA: Raymond A. Berg, 25, of St. Paul pleaded guilty in Ramsey County District Court to one count of first-degree assault. He will be sentenced July 15 by District Judge Marybeth Dorn.
On Jan. 27, two days after the attack at the grocery store in the Sun Ray Shopping Center in St. Paul, the court ordered Berg to undergo a mental health evaluation. He was deemed competent to stand trial.
EARLIER INCIDENTS: According to court documents, Berg had been charged in December with throwing televisions into one another at Wal-Mart, 1450 University Av. W., in the Midway area. He said his goal then also was to go to jail.
He pleaded guilty in January to first-degree damage to property and was sentenced in February to 366 days in prison.
On Jan. 25, about 10:45 a.m., he walked into Cub at 2197 Old Hudson Rd. and stabbed a male cashier. The victim's injuries were not life-threatening.
