A homeless man who died early Wednesday in a north Minneapolis house fire was identified Friday by the Hennepin County medical examiner as Lucious Varnado, 57. He was killed by "apparent smoke inhalation," the examiner reported.
Varnado's death prompted a warning from the Minneapolis Fire Department about the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Fire officials said he started a fire on the floor of a first-floor bedroom in an abandoned house in the 1400 block of Barnes Place. The fire spread. He was found unconscious by firefighters responding at 12:30 a.m. Wednesday to reports of a fire inside the house.
Varnado was pronounced dead at Hennepin County Medical Center.
