0:28In what police called a rare crime for a downtown Minneapolis hotel, a 33-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday on one of the upper floors of the Millennium Hotel, possibly by an acquaintance, police said. It was the city's first homicide of the year.
The victim, Jeremy Robert Shannon of Minneapolis, died as the result of multiple gunshot wounds, according to the Hennepin County medical examiner.
He was shot about 2:30 a.m. in Room 911 of the hotel, at 1313 Nicollet Mall. He and the suspect were in a room that had been booked by a group of people.
There were several witnesses to the shooting, police spokesman Sgt. Steve McCarty said. Shannon was pronounced dead at the scene.
A male suspect in the shooting fled to the Hyatt Regency Hotel across the street and was arrested without incident, McCarty said.
The 33-year-old suspect, from Cedar, in the north metro, was being held Saturday night in the Hennepin County jail on suspicion of murder.
McCarty said Shannon and the suspect probably knew each other. Investigators were working to determine what led to the shooting, he said.
"Our downtown area is pretty safe relative to other cities our size," McCarty said Saturday afternoon. "I'd categorize [the shooting] at this point as an isolated incident."
