A federal grand jury in St. Paul on Wednesday indicted Rory A. Mitchell, 50, most recently from Tacoma, Wash., on charges of holding up two banks on April 15 — one in Burnsville and another in Maple Grove — then a third on April 21 in Maplewood.
The first holdup occurred about 4:10 p.m. April 15 at a TCF Bank branch in Burnsville at 1400 W. County Road 42 and netted $970. Less than 90 minutes later and nearly 30 miles to the north, a Wells Fargo branch at 6225 Sycamore Lane N. in Maple Grove was robbed of $5,400. On April 21, a Wells Fargo branch on White Bear Avenue in Maplewood was robbed of $2,931.
Mitchell was arrested that night in Minneapolis with Kimberly A. Hillage, 43, who was charged earlier with aiding him. After seeing bank surveillance images, a Bloomington hotel employee had told police that Hillage and Mitchell had been staying there.
Mitchell's criminal history includes convictions in Washington state for burglary, eluding police and illicit drug possession.
