A freight train struck and killed a 37-year-old man overnight in Wright County, authorities said.

The Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway reported that the incident occurred shortly after 1 a.m. Friday on the westbound tracks just east of Waverly, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The man was identified Friday afternoon as Virgil W. Dalbec, 37, of Montrose, Minn.

BNSF spokeswoman Amy McBeth said that Dalbec was "not in a designated crossing" when hit.
