Man hit by train and killed near Detroit Lakes

A 41-year-old man walking on tracks near Detroit Lakes, Minn., was hit by a train and killed, authorities said.

The incident occurred about 5:10 p.m. Sunday a mile north of Detroit Lakes, according to the Becker County Sheriff's Office.

Joseph M. Mackner, of Detroit Lakes, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Canadian Pacific freight train was about halfway into its 200-mile southbound trip from Thief River Falls to Glenwood when it hit Mackner from behind, the Sheriff's Office said.

"Based on the preliminary investigation, it appears the crew sounded the train's horn and applied the emergency brake but was unable to stop in time," said Canadian Pacific spokesman Andy Cummings. "It can take a train a mile or more to come to a complete stop."
