Minneapolis police found the body of a man who appeared to have been beaten to death in a north Minneapolis alley late Saturday.

Investigators said Sunday that a preliminary exam indicated that the man had been assaulted, but the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office said no identity or official cause of death would be released until Monday.

Officers were called to the alley behind a house in the 3300 block of Girard Avenue N., in the Folwell neighborhood, at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, said Sgt. Stephen McCarty.

The victim was unresponsive and efforts to revive him were unsuccessful, McCarty added.

Police said that anyone with information about the incident should call the department's tips line at 612-692-8477.
