Man fatally shot in St. Paul’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood

The death is the first homicide of 2026 in St. Paul.

St. Paul police say a man was shot to death Jan. 31 in the city’s Payne-Phalen neighborhood.

Officers arrived on the 900 block of York Avenue at about 2:25 p.m. Saturday after getting a call about a shooting. They arrived to find a 25-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, police said.

The man died at the scene, and his death was the first homicide in St. Paul this year. The victim’s identity has not been released.

The shooting happened inside a residence, said Sgt. Toy Vixayvong.

Police are still trying to identify suspects and determine who the shooter was, Vixayvong said.

It was not immediately clear if any weapons were recovered at the scene, he said.

Investigators are also working to find out what led to the shooting, he said.
