Man drowns in Mankato pond; another found dead in lake near Ely

One man drowned at a popular Mankato swimming spot, while another was found dead in a lake near Ely, law enforcement officials said.

A 23-year-old Mankato man who had been swimming with friends about 6:40 p.m. Saturday at Hiniker Pond in Mankato went into the water and did not resurface. His brother tried to locate him without success. Mankato police arrived and pulled the victim from the water. He was taken to Mayo Clinic Health System in Mankato, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Blue Earth County Sheriff's Office.

His name is being withheld pending notification of relatives.

On Friday, Daniel F. Scufsa, 50, of Ely, was found dead in Burntside Lake, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said Saturday. His death is not considered suspicious, but it will remain under investigation until autopsy results are available, the office said in a news release.
