A 19-year-old man told police that he shot and killed another Minneapolis man last month during a drug deal gone wrong, according to charges filed Wednesday.
Darrius Davantae Parkman, of Minneapolis, was charged with murder after police tracked him to Chicago, where he allegedly fled after shooting Michael Jones, 30, in the hallway of an apartment building in the 2200 block of 5th Avenue S. on Aug. 18.
According to the criminal complaint, officers used Jones' cellphone, which had received numerous calls from a number around the time of death before stopping. The phone number turned out to be registered to Parkman's mother. Parkman was eventually located in Chicago after being arrested on suspicion of suspected armed robbery.
According to the complaint, Parkman admitted to police that he had told Jones that he would sell him marijuana, but instead, he pulled a gun on him to rob him. Jones came at Parkman, who shot him and then ran away, Parkman said. A female acquaintance of Parkman's later told police that she had been in the hall with the men when she heard a shot and ran out. Parkman left for Chicago the next day, she said.
Parkman is being held at the Hennepin County jail.
