A 43-year-old Crystal man was charged Tuesday with burglary in connection with a Saturday morning break-in in Minneapolis where one of the investigating officers was later shot and wounded.

Andrew Neal, who was charged with first-degree burglary, is expected to make his first court appearance Wednesday. The county attorney's office is seeking $500,000 bail for Neal.

"There was sufficient evidence to charge him with this crime," said Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. "Minneapolis police is continuing its investigation into the Saturday morning events and if they find evidence linking Mr. Neal to other crimes, we can consider additional charges."

According to the criminal complaint, police were called to an address in the 1100 block of 24th Avenue N. just before 5 a.m. because Neal had broken into the house. Living in the house were Neal's former girlfriend, her current boyfriend and the boyfriend's teenage son. Neal had a hammer and threatened the son with it, then lunged at the father, who cut Neal slightly with a pocket knife before Neal fled out the back door, the complaint states.

Minneapolis police officer Jordan Davis was one of the responding officers. After he left the house and walked to his squad car, someone fired a shot that hit him, according to the complaint. Police later found a handgun and two magazines in a nearby back yard; it is being analyzed. Later in the day, Neal was arrested at an apartment at the 1100 block of Logan Avenue N., the complaint states.

Davis has been released from the hospital.
