A 49-year-old St. Paul man was beaten with what he believes was a baseball bat early Thursday morning and robbed of $1,100 on the city's East Side.

The man told police he was getting out of his car about 1:30 a.m. in the 1000 block of Arcade Street between E. Jenks and E. Lawson avenues when he was approached by two suspects and struck from behind and beaten unconscious.

When he came to about an hour later, he found his pockets had been gone through and he had been robbed. He called his son to take him to Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

He suffered severe injuries to his face, head and neck, but they are not life-threatening.

St. Paul police are investigating.
