A man who allegedly placed a pipe bomb in the woods behind a fire station in Ramsey on Monday afternoon is being held in the Anoka County jail, police said.

Officers found the bomb behind the station on the 5600 block of NW. Alpine Drive after a witness called police to report a man placing the device in an area between Station No. 2 and a power substation to the east, police said.

Ramsey Police, Ramsey Fire, and the Minneapolis Bomb Squad responded about 3:30 p.m. to secure the area and investigate. The device, they determined, contained explosive material. It was safely decommissioned by the bomb squad, police said.

Authorities searched a nearby residence and a man was arrested on charges he violated a state statute on explosive and incendiary devices.

A woman at the residence also was arrested, on charges of possessing a controlled substance.
