A rampage in a homeless encampment west of downtown Minneapolis left one man dead from about two dozen stab wounds and a second victim with numerous injuries, according to charges filed Monday.

Stevie Lopez Lindsey, 25, of Minneapolis was charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree murder and second-degree attempted murder in connection with the attacks on Dec. 2 at the encampment in the Kenwood neighborhood near Sheridan Avenue S. and Kenwood Parkway.

Lindsey appeared in court Tuesday and remains jailed in lieu of $1 million bail. He’s due back in court on Jan. 15.

Police are withholding the name of the man who died, other than to say he is 51 years old. Police on Tuesday identified the man who survived as 43-year-old Theodore Andrew Fox.

According to the criminal complaint:

A call to 911 about 7 p.m. from the area of Kenwood Parkway and Sheridan Avenue S. alerted police to a man in the snow who appeared to be dead.

Officers walked a short distance into the woods and found a man face-down who “appeared to be frozen and was deceased,” the complaint read.

In an encampment with four tents nearby, they found Fox on his back with a large chest wound and other injuries to his neck and arms. Emergency responders took him to HCMC.

Officers recovered a bloodied knife in one of the tents.

Fox told police nearly a week later that he and the other victim were good friends who were living in the tents full time. He recalled being in his tent alone when Lindsey came in and stabbed him. He said Lindsey would bring him supplies on a regular basis during the five or so weeks he knew him.

Fox also “told officers that he did not know why [Lindsey] did this,” the complaint continued.

The Medical Examiner’s Office found stab wounds all over the body of the man who was killed. Ten of the roughly two dozen wounds were to his upper chest and back.
