On the first day of school, a St. Paul man allegedly stood naked in front of a window facing a bus stop, exposing himself to a student who had complained about similar incidents in the spring, according to charges filed in Ramsey County District Court.

Steven Gustindino Schumacher, 56, is now charged with three gross misdemeanor counts of fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct for alleged incidents in April, May and on Tuesday.

St. Paul police were first called to the bus stop at 5th Street and Bates Avenue in the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood on April 21 after a 13-year-old girl reported that a man stood naked in a garden-level bay window for five minutes. A 14-year-old boy told police that he and others saw the man exposing himself. The boy called it "creepy," the charges said.

Schumacher told police that he had been sleeping at the time and denied exposing himself to children at the bus stop.

Police were called again to the address May 8 after the same 13-year-old girl said she saw the man pull down his pants and hold his arms up over his head for about two minutes. Schumacher again told police he didn't expose himself, according to the charges.

There were no incidents reported over the summer, a fact that police noted to Schumacher when they questioned him this week. Police spoke with the same girl on Tuesday, as well as a woman who was walking her son and two daughters to the bus stop when she saw a man standing naked in the window.

Schumacher told police he was in his own home and had done nothing wrong, the charges said. He said he opened his curtains to let the sun in and he was changing clothes and was naked. He said he wasn't targeting children and didn't intend to expose himself.
