COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. ā€” A man accused of assaulting a state trooper in Stearns County and leading law enforcement officers from 16 agencies on a manhunt has been arrested, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The 29-year-old suspect was arrested without resistance about 6:30 p.m. Thursday near Sagatagan Lake on the campus of St. John's University in Collegeville, the St. Cloud Times reported.

The search for the man began about 7:30 a.m. Thursday after the trooper pulled him over on Interstate 94 on suspicion of drunken driving. The patrol says that after a breath test the man punched the trooper in the face, causing multiple fractures which will require surgery.

As the suspect fled, an officer involved in the pursuit saw the suspect reach his arm out of his vehicle while holding something black in his hand, possibly a firearm, the patrol said.

After fleeing, the suspect robbed an individual and took their clothes, cell phone and car keys, officials said.

Spike strips were used to stop the vehicle and the suspect fled on foot in the area of the university. Law enforcement officials asked residents in the area to lock their doors and windows. The university was also locked down.

According to the Minnesota Department of Corrections, the man has been a fugitive since Oct. 24, wanted on a weapons charge.
