Could it be the dumbest art-show title ever?
A just-announced show in Bloomington that pairs male and female artists is being called "Lace and Gunpowder: The Male/Female Art Exhibition."
Opening at the Bloomington Art Center's Inez Greenberg Gallery mid-month, the exhibition features the artistic teams of Tina Blondell & Nicholas Harper, Karen Searle & David Aschenbrener, Lynn Speaker & John Schuerman, and Kim Matthews & Ron Taylor.
Schuerman is also the show organizer.
Press materials predict that in viewing side-by-side works by these gender-opposite artists, "the viewer will also be challenged by personal and societal preconceived stereotypes."
I'm challenged by so many preconceived notions just in the show's title. Organizers no doubt considered, and then rejected such alternates as "Lipstick and Thunder," "Panties and Muskets" or "Knitters and Troglodytes." What about "Masters and Supermodels," "Bosses and Secretaries" or even "The Underpaid and the Powerful"?
The show runs Jan. 13 through Feb. 17 at at 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road in Bloomington. That means there's still time: Perhaps the show's female artists can have a quick word with Mr. Schuerman.
