Malakas Brushes Japan and Begins to Weaken

While the center of Malakas remained more than 300 miles away from Tokyo, someouter rain bands brushed the area Friday into Saturday.Nearly an inch of rain fell across the city throughout the day, while windsfrequently gusted past 35 mph. A few times, winds gusted as high as 45 mph.

Malakas moved over the Volcano and Bonin islands Friday. Winds gusted as highas 114 mph at Iwo To, while the highest stained winds were near 75 mph.

Malakas unleashed more than 5 inches of rain to these islands on Friday alone,with rain persisting into Saturday morning.

As of Saturday morning, EDT, Malakas was losing its tropical characteristicsdespite maintaining sustained winds near 85 mph.

Malakas will continue to lose its tropical characteristics Sunday as it racesnortheastward over the open waters of the Pacific Ocean.

This storm may eventually bring rain and gusty winds to the Aleutian Islands ofAlaska next week.
