Leading 12-0 at halftime, Mahtomedi capped a 75-yard drive with a touchdown when senior running back T.J. Tumbleson dashed through St. Thomas Academy's second level, making one cut in a race to the end zone. The 5-9, 200-pound tailback plowed through a Cadets defender in the end zone to cap his team's scoring in the season-opening home victory.
Key of the game: Zephyrs receiver Andy Voyen let his 6-3 presence be felt. The senior scored the game's first touchdown on a 93-yard Mahtomedi drive that put the Zephyrs up 9-0. Voyen's three catches on the drive accounted for 74 yards. He beat his defender 46 yards down the sideline to score.
Quote: "We are very confident in our passing game, offensive line and our quarterback. He made the throws, and I made the plays." — Voyen on his 129 yards receiving.
Worth noting: The smash-and-dash combination of Tumbleson and fellow senior running back Jalen Frye combined for 167 rushing yards.
