Madia claims lead in DFL nominating race for Ramstad's seat

March 12, 2008 at 12:49AM

Ashwin Madia, a DFL candidate in the Third Congressional District, has won a total of 49.5 state Senate district delegates, his campaign announced.

All but 10 of those were won in five district contests last weekend. By comparison, state Sen. Terri Bonoff's campaign claims 46 delegates, a total that includes superdelegates -- which Madia currently isn't counting. Ninety-five delegates are needed to gain endorsement.

A third DFL candidate, Edina Mayor Jim Hovland, also is seeking the party endorsement.

The final five district contests will be held Saturday, and the DFL nomination for the seat held by retiring Rep. Jim Ramstad will be decided April 12. State Rep. Erik Paulsen of Eden Prairie is running on the Republican side.
