A 21-year-old student from Macalester College will be honored today in San Francisco with a Brower Youth Award, which is an award that recognizes six North American environmental leaders between the ages of 13 and 22.

Timothy DenHerder-Thomas will receive a $3,000 award and participate in skills-building and mentoring workshops.

DenHerder-Thomas demonstrated that "climate solutions are bold opportunities for economic profit and community building as opposed to personal sacrifices," according to a news release.

He spearheaded the creation of the Clean Energy Revolving Fund at Macalester, which is a financial pool for campus initiatives that funds profitable sustainability projects that repay the fund and help it grow.

The awards are named after David Brower, the founder of Earth Island who helped to preserve the Grand Canyon.
