Loss of tax permit doesn't close bar

A reader asked Whistle­blower why the American Legion Post 284 in Cass Lake, Minn., is serving alcohol, a month after the state forbade sellers from providing liquor to the business. The post was placed on a "liquor posting" list by the Minnesota Department of Revenue in April after the business failed to pay state sales tax on the liquor it sold. This is the post's fifth inclusion on the list since April 2009. State law forbids "wholesalers, manufacturers or brewers" from providing liquor to any business on the list until its tax debt is paid. Retailers also can't sell to the businesses. So what gives? Whistleblower spoke with the post's commander, Wayne LaDuke , who is also the city's mayor. The post is apparently stocked with booze. "We have enough to keep us going for a while," he said.
