Looking for geese

Finding swans

March 31, 2011 at 1:08PM

Two of us were in Sibley County on Tuesday, looking for geese and swans. Both species had been reported to us as "everywhere." As usual, such a statement was an exaggeration. Geese were most nowhere down there. We guessed they've moved north. We did find a nice flock of about 200 Tundra Swans along Highway 99 north of New Ulm. The birds were resting and feeding and calling (spring's most wonderful sound). Ducks too were scarce. There was water in flooded fields, although no lakes have even begun to hint at ice melt. Geese most likely could be found if one drove west an hour or two. Here are some of the swans we found.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
