No, the Star Tribune did not win any Pultizer Prizes this year. But we came close.

The paper's Jill Burcum was a finalist in the category of editorial writing for well-written and well-reported editorials that documented a national shame by taking readers inside dilapidated government schools for Native Americans.

Kathleen Kingsbury of the Boston Globe ended up winning in that category.

The late David Carr, who cut his journalism teeth in the Twin Cities, was a finalist in the category of commentary for a series of columns about the media.

He was edged out by Lisa Falkenberg of the Houston Chronicle, where former Star Tribune editor Nancy Barnes runs the newsroom. The Chronicle had been the largest paper in the country never to win the prestigious award.
