With one exception, the top two vote-getters at each American League position held their ground in the latest round of fan balloting for the July 15 All-Star Game at Target Field, announced Monday.
The exception was at third base, where the Rangers' Adrian Beltre took over the No. 2 spot from the Rays' Evan Longoria, behind leader Josh Donaldson of the Athletics. But Donaldson, who just ended an 0-for-33 slump Sunday, has more than double the votes of Beltre — 1,953,423 to Beltre's 953,318.
The tightest competition is for the third starting job in the outfield, currently held by the Blue Jays' Melky Cabrera at 1,454,528 votes. The A's Yoenis Cespedes, the Orioles' Adam Jones and the Yankees' Jacoby Ellsbury also have more than a million votes. The top two spots are again held by the Blue Jays' Jose Bautista (2,906,878) and the Angels' Mike Trout (2,544,658).
At first base, the Tigers' Miguel Cabrera is the only other AL player to have at least 2 million votes, with 2,030,773.
Baltimore's Matt Wieters still leads at catcher with 1,488,884 votes, more than 400,000 votes more than the Yankees' Brian McCann, but it was announced Monday that Wieters will have Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery and miss the rest of the season.
Balloting for All-Star Game starters ends July 3.
