Lightning delayed a number of metro-area football games in progress Friday evening while some games in the southern part of the state were either called off or will be completed on Saturday.

Among the affected games in the metro area: Eden Prairie at Minnetonka, Maple Grove at Centennial, Fridley at Cooper, Mayer Lutheran at Jordan, Northfield at Red Wing, Orono at Mound-Westonka, Holy Angels at Chaska.

The game at Minnetonka, featuring the Eagles, top-ranked in Class 6A, resumed play at about 9:45 p.m. with less than four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

A 30-minute delay is typically imposed when lightning is reported in the area of a game, according to Minnesota State High School League rules.

Some games in the southern part of Minnesota were called off due to weather, including some nearing completion, while others were postponed and will be completed on Saturday.
