The next outbreak of cold air to move southward into the United States willundoubtedly set a few records. The beginning of the cold wave will arrive asearly as Wednesday night across eastern Montana and North Dakota. Overnight lowtemperatures will plummet to 20 to 30 degrees below zero in spots, and it willfeel even colder with the wind factored in.As more cold air enters the northern Plains on Thursday, high temperatures willnot get above zero across most of the Dakotas and the western half ofMinnesota. Farther south, temperatures will be stuck in the single digits allday as far south as Kansas City.
Temperatures will be just as cold or even colder on Thursday night and Fridayfrom the Dakotas to Wisconsin and southward across Iowa and Missouri. The airis so cold that frostbite can occur on exposed skin in just a matter ofminutes, and prolonged exposure to such temperatures will result in hypothermiaor even death.
